This strategic location has made the town an important connection point between east and west since the Middle Ages. A key highlight is Athlone Castle, originally built in the 13th century by the Normans and rebuilt several times throughout its history, especially after the 1691 siege during the Williamite War. We can also enjoy its lively riverside promenade and local atmosphere, characteristic of a town with a rich trading and river heritage.
We then continue to Galway, known as the "City of the Tribes" in reference to the fourteen Anglo-Norman merchant families who dominated its political and economic life between the 14th and 17th centuries. We will continue our journey to the city of Limerick, where there will be free time to stroll through its streets and have lunch in front of the River Shannon.
